I am bringing in the New Year with some skiing which promises to end with me freezing due to inclement weather. Regardless, today's post is going up early so I can get out the door and get some fresh powder. Below is the fifth page of Project Menagerie. Jaymes Reed will be lettering this project, so hopefully you'll get to see words with the pretty pictures real soon.

To prove that I am still working (mostly to myself), I present to you a pencil sketch for page eight of The Reckoners. You see there's this thing called Mass Effect that I got for Christmas and it has consumed my soul.

It would appear that the Lord frowns on folks visiting the zoo on his son's birthday. It's interesting how folks often refer to good things as God's will, but bad things as the fault of mankind. It's a zero sum game. If God is omnipotent, and he does interpose his will, then everything must be God's will.

I once had a priest explain to me the opposite side of that argument in a very interesting way. He proposed a situation where someone was about to shoot another person. Could God stop the bullets? Most certainly. However, if he did, neither individual would truly be free.

To follow up on strange post-Christmas babble, I present the fourth page of Project Menagerie.

Tom Tancredo has finally decided to stop embarrassing his fellow Coloradans and drop out of the presidential race. In celebration, I present to you the third page of Project Menagerie. As Monday is Christmas Eve, there will be no posting.

Cristian Valdes and I have been hashing out the first few pages to Project Menagerie. Below is a preview of the second page. I would have posted the first, but without the lettering the first page is essentially a big black spot. There's also some new reviews in the reading section.

A massive schedule change has precipitated a complete lack of sleep over the last few days, so without further ado I present the colored fifth page of Underside.
12.14.07
To round up our week of deviating art I bring you (all two of you) the fifth page to Underside.

For another compare and contrast, here is the colored page 2 of Underside. While at first I thought that Philipp was attempting to color the story into the past, after discussing it with him I came to realize he is attempting to convey a sense of season, as it mentions that it is Autumn in the script.

While Philipp Neudorf is very talented, I wouldn't call him linear. So far for Underside he's done inks and colors for Page 3, as well as sketches for Pages 4, 5 and 1. If there's a pattern as to how he is selecting which page to do next, I have no idea what it is. Regardless, here are the inks for Page 2.

One of the reasons I enjoyed the interview with Martin Thomas is because I think that colorists are some of the unsung heroes of comic books. While that may sound clichéd, I really don't think that's overstating it too much. Since Jason Hazel had to step down as the artist of Underside I've had the fortune of working with Philipp Neundorf who is a talented colorist as well as inker. Below are two samples of the same page, one in black & white, the other colored in Philipp's particular style.
With the coloring, you get a sense of time and season. Quite the startling difference, isn't it?

The Luna brothers is a name that you may have heard before. If you've been visiting the reading section you certainly have. They are the creators of a great new series out from Image entitled The Sword.

Well, I think it's great.

Anyway, they were kind enough to sit down and discuss the first arc of their newest project with me over at Silver Bullet Comic Books. Check it out.

Sorry I missed you yesterday, but I was in a far away land called Texas. Speaking of which, I recently interviewed a gent from Austin named Martin Thomas, the colorist for Left on Mission. Martin, who's been in and out of comics since the early '90s, sat down to discuss his work with BOOM! Studios as well as other independent titles. You can read about it over at Silver Bullet Comic Books.
